Fairtrade

The 10 principles of fair trade

Fair trade is a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency and respect that seeks greater equity in international trade. These are the principles Coopernovarum follows with every bag of coffee.

1. Opportunities for small producers

Fair trade exists to include small-scale producers, giving them access to markets that used to be out of reach and strengthening family income.

2. Transparency and accountability

Open management and accountability to members and trading partners — as in our annual general assemblies.

3. Fair trading practices

Long-term trading relationships based on trust, mutual respect and keeping our word.

4. Fair price

A guaranteed minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production, plus a premium that goes back to the community.

5. No child labour, no forced labour

Respect for children's rights and for every worker's freedom, at every stage of production.

6. Non-discrimination, gender equity and freedom of association

Equal opportunities for women and men, and everyone's right to organise and take part in decisions.

7. Good working conditions

A safe and healthy workplace, with attention to the correct use of inputs and protective equipment.

8. Capacity building

Ongoing training for farmers in good agricultural practices, coffee quality and farm management.

9. Promoting fair trade

Spreading the idea that it is possible to buy and sell fairly, from farmer to consumer.

10. Respect for the environment

Soil conservation, protection of springs and biodiversity, and reduced use of hazardous products.
